Plowbreak Member Guide

and frequently asked questions

What does free choice mean?

The free choice CSA system is very important to us, because we have found that it encourages some of the most important elements of a CSA: flexibility, freedom and community. Each week we set up a market-style stand at the local beer garden, and our members come to choose their vegetables for the week and quantity of each. If you don't like lettuce, or if it's growing in your own garden, you don't have to take it. If you like beets a lot, take a couple extra. We do set some limits when items are in short supply but offer some flexibility within that. Each week our free choice members can choose from (and take home) anywhere between 10 and 15 items.

If you and a roommate have a share, we ask that you come together, or that one person picks up for both of you. Because of the nature of the free choice model, we can't allow the splitting of shares between households, and we ask that members do not take excess produce for freezing, canning or preservation of any kind. If those aspects of vegetable eating are important to you, we understand! It's okay to do this with our boxed shares.

I don't want to waste any produce! How will I know how much to take?

There's a bit of a learning curve at first, but you'll figure it out! We always tell people: just imagine you are at the grocery store, and take a comparable amount. And then maybe a little bit more, because it can't hurt to eat more vegetables and try new ones you haven't eaten before!

Can I switch to a boxed share?

Boxed shares are sold out for the 2020 season.

My household has three (or more) adults. Can I join?

For households with more than two adults we charge an additional $100 per adult. Contact us for more information.

When does the CSA season start and end?

For 2020, the CSA begins the second week of June (Wednesday 6/10 and Thursday 6/11) and ends the second week of November (Wednesday 11/11 and Thursday 11/12).

I'm going on vacation and will miss a pick-up. What are my options?

You can send a friend to pick up your share in your place, or you can switch your pick-up location for that week. (**Each share household may switch their pick-up location up to two times per season.) If you choose to switch your location for the week, you must notify us via email one week in advance of your missed pick-up so that we can have your produce ready for you at the alternate location.

What types of vegetables do you grow?

You can find a list of those here.
