It has been a good week for your farmers, and by extension, their vegetables! Two and a half inches of rain came sweeping down this week, blanketing our crops with nourishing moisture.
So basically it's been really wet here!
We are very thankful to have someone else doing the irrigation. Our final spring plantings went in this week, melons, our fifth planting of lettuce basil and Asian greens, and our second planting of summer squash. Sweet corn, beans and potatoes have poked up from beneath the earth in the back field and the tomatoes in the greenhouses are about waist deep in some places.
This week our share is very similar to last week, with lots of cooking and salad greens, crunchy radishes and sweet turnips, and herbs and garlic to spice up your dishes. Look for more scallions in the share in the coming weeks, as well as more broccoli and pretty soon some kohlrabi.
If you have a mushroom share with our neighbors Wellspring Forest Farm, this is the first week for pickup of your shiitakes ! I believe they are still offering shares for sale as well. Wide awake bread shares will continue this week also.
On to eating the food we've got for you: Kara and I just finished up a lovely meal of stir fried pork and garlic greens and turnips, with braised Asian greens and topped off with minced scallions. We like combining raw and cooked vegetables into our meals whenever possible and it is a great tip for this time of year when most veggies we have can be served cooked or raw.
Sometimes we just don't have time to cook much so we'll prep our veggies and greens in advance for topping sandwiches, wraps, eggs, etc. The easier they are to eat the more you will eat them!
We welcome your suggestions for great veggie recipes and will publish any that you would like to send in!
For this week the share will contain:
Swiss chard (limited numbers because of a bug called a leaf miner that nibbles the leaves)
Scallions (limited this week )
-- see you soon!
Aaron and Kara !
