CSA Week 6! Cucumbers!

Hi CSA members!

Alright, so in case you aren't already aware, we here in Ithaca are in the midst of a SERIOUS drought! It is dry as a desert out in the field even after we got some rain Monday night....

While we are prepared for this, because farmers have to be prepared for anything, and have been irrigating everything as much as we can, it is definitely having an impact on our crops! Our lettuce has all prematurely bolted, and though we have new plantings in the ground and will have some for you today, we may not have any for a few weeks, unfortunately.

However! You'll forget all about lettuce because we have CUCUMBERS! It's that time of year, folks, for fresh cucumber salads and tiny cucumber sandwiches like British people eat, I think, and fridge pickles and all kinds of cucumber-related delicacies.

We will definitely have tomatoes soon! We have green fruit already, and they are loving this heat!

Also, if any of you recipe-inclined folks would like to e-mail us your favorite recipes you're using our veggies in, we'd love to feature them on the newsletter for other CSA members to get inspired by. Often our own recipes go something like this: toss a bunch of vegetables in a pan, cook them, and eat them, so we'd love some creative stuff to post each week!

A final note: if you are on a payment plan, the next installments are due this week! Thanks!

Alright, and here's what we'll have for you this week at the Westy/on farm pick up:

Cucumbers (make fridge pickles: cut up cukes, cover with half water/vinegar solution, salt to taste, add some dill for fresh flavor. Let sit for two days, eat in ecstasy.)
Cabbage
Kale
Rainbow Swiss Chard
Parsley
Dill
Basil
Summer Squash/Zucchini
Beets
Green Onions
Lettuce (last week!)
Broccoli
Turnips (last week!)

Thanks, your farmers,

Aaron and Kara
