things have certainly gotten chillier around here - last week brought
us and possibly you the first frost of the season! No more basil, very
few zucchini, and minimal tomatoes. But lots of peppers, because we
picked those and have them in the cooler!
We are beginning the farm cleanup, which involves lots of work that we
REALLY don't like doing, like rolling up drip irrigation tape, pulling
out tomato stakes and pulling out and rolling up black plastic mulch,
which we reuse. Some farms throw these materials away every year, but
we feel like they are too valuable to waste, and we wouldn't feel very
sustainable if we just tossed them every year.
We are also thinking that we would like to offer an additional share
week the first week of November, and would charge $30 per household
for a LARGE share full of roots, potatoes, squash and greens, most of
which will keep for weeks, if not months, in the crisper drawer or the
We also have enough fall veggies to offer a Thanksgiving share, which
would cost $30 as well and would contain potatoes, rutabagas,
sunchokes, turnips, daikon radishes, cooking greens and salad greens
and cabbage, to make a complete, local and fresh Thanksgiving meal!
Just add turkey.
We will only offer these if we get enough member to sign up! Please
let us know before the end of the CSA (October 28th) if you would like
to be a part of either or BOTH! Members that want to sign up for both
shares will get a discount! Please RSVP via email or talk to us in
person if you would like to sign up. Thanks!
Also, we have brussel sprouts this week! These babies are DELICIOUS
roasted with some olive oil and herbs in the oven until tender . . .
AND: here's a good article on how to use parsley in interesting ways!
And now, here's what's in your shares this week:
Purple Top Turnips
Spicy Salad Mix
Zucchini (a few)
Winter Squash -- delicata, spaghetti, butternut.
See you all soon!
