We're just chugging along this week, it seems like work never stops on
the farm. We harvested lots (two truck loads) of winter squash from
the fields before the unseasonal frost the other night, and more
hardier types are still out there that survived the coating of ice
crystals. We covered most of our other crops with row cover, which
kept them safe and warm.
Next week our new 20 foot by 72 foot greenhouse is going up, which
means lots of things: greens in the winter, first of all, and MORE
tomatoes and peppers and cucumbers and eggplants next year! And less
worrying about late blight. So we're very excited for that. Right now
we're amending the soil where it's going, and the chickens are helping
by "fertilizing" it as well.
I was thinking this week that sometimes we get in a rut and don't eat,
say, beets for a few weeks. Then we roast some or boil some and we're
like, oh man these are the best! That's the great thing about a CSA,
is that often you can just stop grabbing different items if you're
sick of them, and come back to them later. So feel free to mix and
match each week, or take one of everything, or some combination
thereof! The beauty of the system is that we'd like you to shop as you
Something Kara and I have been doing recently is making asian style
noodle soups, and then topping them off with fresh basil, cilantro and
scallions. (cilantro is in the share this week!) this is a perfect
week to do that. Try a miso soup, or a jjam bong seafood soup, or a
pho, and you can cook some napa cabbage and green beans and carrots in
the soup, and then top it with those delicious, aromatic greens and
herbs! This is a great early fall soup, and even more so if you chop a
serrano into it. (but only one).
Anyways, lunch time is beckoning, and we'll see most of you very soon!
The listicle of vegetables:
Asian Greens Salad Mix
Leeks (please saute me in butter, pretty please!)
Very Limited Tomatoes
Winter Squash -- Delicata and dumplings! (Cut em in half and roast em,
drizzle a lil maple syrup in there if you like. Great served with
butter sauteed leeks!)
Cilantro. (oh yeah.)
See you soon!
