It has truly been a pleasure this year to serve you all food. This is the last week of our summer/fall CSA, and we can genuinely say that we've enjoyed almost every moment of it. (Rainy harvest days and equipment breakdowns being the exception.)
This year we learned A LOT more about farming and growing vegetables than we knew last year, and every year we are able to become better at what we do because of your support! We are able to invest in our small business and our own lives with your financial support, and we hope our contribution to your kitchens has proven worthwhile.
You're all also on the front line of a trend of eating more food that is actually GOOD for you. Recently I was reading an article about how Americans can't be bothered to eat fresh vegetables. Here's a stunning paragraph from it:
"a 2010 assessment published jointly by the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, which produce the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, revealed that only 5 percent of Americans younger than 50 are getting the recommended amounts of vegetables, with only 10 to 25 percent of older adults achieving this goal. A majority of Americans, on average, are eating half as many vegetables as they should."
The article went on to list like, about 20 different diseases you were much less likely to get if you ate just the recommended amount of vegetables daily. So clap yourselves on the back, because even though vegetables aren't as cool as bacon or chicken wings or salt and vinegar potato chips, they will keep you hale and hearty until your grandchildren are having grandchildren of their own.
We sincerely hope to see you all next year! For those of you who have joined our winter CSA, we will be e-mailing shortly with more details about that. For those on the fence about joining, we have less than five spots left, so don't delay. $90 buys three monthly pickups of a bushel box of roots, cabbage, brussels sprouts, kale, salad greens and more!
If you plan to join our CSA in the spring again we are offering a price freeze for current members. We will be increasing the price of our CSA somewhat in the spring for cost of living reasons, but current members who sign up by March 1st can do so for $495, our 2013 price. We would love to see all your smiling faces again at pickup this coming summer.
Again, thanks for a great year, and for supporting our farm.
Without further ado, your last list o' roots, greens n' more.
