We're very excited this year to raise 75 Cornish Cross broilers for our CSA members and customers. They will eat local corn -- from right across the street, and fresh milled so it's more nutritious! -- and sweet, protein-rich, moist spent grain from a local brewery. On top of that, they'll be chomping through a variety of grasses, bugs and other lovely invertebrates on our lush pasture. We're calling these birds "beer broilers" because of the spent grain feed.
The tractor is modeled after Joel Salatin's chicken tractors at Polyface Farm, and uses a dolly as a temporary axle to allow us to move it across the field in daily increments so the birds have fresh pasture all the time. We'll also open it up when Kara and I -- and more importantly, farm dog hero Lena -- are here to watch, so the birds can totally free range in safety.
In the background you can see SNOW, eight inches of which was dumped on our unsuspecting seedlings two nights ago, and has yet to melt. Hopefully all will be OK when it melts away. That's farming for ya.
CSA is close to being full, if you're on the fence please reserve your spot now, as we'll feel bad turning people away.
